Can the recreational hunting of feral animals protect native wildlife?

We believe, in a strategic, multi-plan approach with recreational hunting playing a key role - not only in the control of introduced feral animals but in the sighting and reporting of feral pest numbers to the relevant authorities.

Approximately 20 species of mammals, 30 species of birds, 21 species of fish, 5 species of amphibians (water born, but later live on the land e.g. frogs), 500 species of invertebrates (animals without a backbone, e.g. insects), and 1500 species of plants have been introduced into the Australian environment since European settlement, and have multiplied dramatically in the wild.

A feral animal is defined as a domesticated or tame animal that escapes its domestic environment. These animals adapt and become wild and aggressive to the top of the food chain. An exotic animal is one that has been introduced into a new environment through a deliberate placement. These exotic animals were generally useful as sources of food or used for transportation.

Native flora and fauna will only have a chance at survival through education and awareness, teamed with a dedication in the actions of conservation hunting practices.

No one way is perfect, and we acknowledge that some people want to protect all species - introduced or not. But we are also realistic in our approach to conservation hunting. Australia is a country of feast and famine, all locked in a battle for survival. What mother nature gives, it also takes away though drought, fires, and floods.

To play a part in the balancing of the scales so our native species stand a fighting chance makes conservation hunting worth working towards.

It will be through this process that the destruction caused by these animals can begin to be resolved.

Important! Make sure you stop and read the document below, share it with your group, ask any questions and fully understand its contents before going any further.

Everyone in your group must read this information

Bookings are only accepted on the understanding that you agree with these terms. Any breach of the following rules will result in instant ejection from the property and a demand of payment for any damages, along with police involvement if necessary. In addition, IHP will refuse to take any future bookings from all members of your party to hunt on ANY of our properties.

If your actions result in your being banned from this property, you and all members of your group will also be banned from all other IHP properties. There are no second chances! Make certain that all members of your group read and understand the critical information listed on this page.

SSAA, The Shooters Union or hunting club membership required by all hunters & adult non-hunters

All bookings are taken in good faith. However, Inland Hunting Properties cannot guarantee the availability of game, or be held responsible for prevailing weather conditions.

No refunds will be given (see cancellation information below).

Cancellations

Important cancellation information:

• The booking fee paid to IHP is non-refundable and non-transferable.
  
• There are no refunds or credits of the booking fee given for cancellations or postponements.
  
• Failure to notify IHP of a cancellation or request a postponement less than one week prior to the arrival date will result in your being charged the balance of the booking plus $100 in costs.
  
• There will be no refunds from the property owner.
  
• IHP reserves the right to postpone or cancel bookings at any time. IHP also reserves the right to decline a booking without providing a reason.
• Once a booking is made, this booking cannot be changed to another property, another date or lesser people than you have booked for.
  

Important Information

You will be held personally liable for the full cost of repairs, or loss of IHP income if any person in your party causes damage to the property or loss of access to it.

Each person in the group must complete the forms as they arrive at the property.

These are to be returned to the property owner before your stay commences.

You are not permitted to take the forms to the huts or camping ground to complete them. If you refuse to complete the forms you will be asked to leave the property immediately.

How earn your 5 star hunter rating

• Please have your shooters’, drivers’ or fishing license and SSAA membership cards with you.
• Do not venture off until you have been met by the owners and provided with directions and maps.
• Leave all gates as you find them. If they’re open leave them open. If they’re closed leave them closed. It is very important to obey this rule!
• Do not interfere with any equipment, machinery or livestock.
• Do not discharge a firearm in the vicinity of stock or buildings.
• Do not shoot in the house paddocks.
• Do not light fires without the owner’s permission. There may be a fire ban in force and the responsibility for loss of life and damage to the property will be yours. This is a criminal offense. Do not leave fires unattended when lit.
• If dogs are permitted on the property they are to be controlled at all times. When not hunting, they are to be caged, muzzled or tied up. They are not permitted in the accommodation. Do not leave with fewer dogs than you arrived with.
• Please inform the property owner of any accidental damage or problems you may have encountered during your stay. Don’t leave problems for the property owners to find after you have left.
• Goat hunting. On some properties, you are not allowed to hunt goats. On others, goat hunting is limited. Please respect this, as goats are worth money to the property owner. If you pay only a few hundred dollars to go hunting and you shoot $1000 worth of goats you won’t be welcomed back and they will stop all access to their property for future hunters! Please confirm with the owner on arrival the limits for goats and other game. If you hunt goats on a property where it is not allowed, you will be prosecuted. If you are not sure, please check with IHP prior to your trip.
• Don’t go ballistic! Look after your hunting future and ensure that you and other hunters continue to benefit from access to IHP properties.
• Don’t litter. All rubbish should be taken away with you, or ask where the rubbish tip is. No rubbish is to be thrown in rivers and dams.
• There are hazards with riding motorbikes and 4-wheelers. You must be wearing a helmet at all times while riding. If you are going to take motorbikes (and if the property owner permits it), you do so at your own risk.

If there are any accidents, neither property owners nor IHP will be held liable, as you have been warned of the risks.

• Vehicle access will be restricted to campsites only if excessive rainfall has occurred. Owner’s discretion applies in the interests of safety and the preservation of tracks.
• Do not ever drive through crops!
• Adjoining property owners are not to be approached for access. Property boundary limits are to be strictly adhered to at all times. Neighbours have been known to call police when trespassers are sighted.
• Do not discard animal remains in, or near, waterways.
• Strong 4x4 recovery equipment is recommended when driving on the properties.
• While on the property you are a guest of the property owner and any rules imposed by them take precedence over the rules listed here.

• The following information on the availability of fuel is correct at the time of printing. For your safety and convenience, trading hours should be confirmed prior to your departure.
• Eftpos machines are scarce in remote places, so please ensure you have sufficient cash with you.

SSAA or hunting club membership required by all hunters

Copies of firearms licenses, plus Sporting Shooters' Association of Australia (SSAA), The Shooters Union or Approved Hunting Organisation membership (AHO), must be uploaded via the Secure Hunter Registration Area when booking.

For insurance purposes, every hunter must be a member of SSAA, The Shooters Union or a registered hunting club to make use of IHP’s services.

Please note that property owners rate all members of the group. To allow future use of IHP’s services, a minimum 4-star rating out of 5 is required. This shouldn’t be an issue for the vast majority of hunters, and members of their group, who conduct themselves professionally and respect the owner’s property.

Just thought I would send you a quick email with some feedback from our hunt at Milparinka.

Although the pigs were hard to find (we only managed 1) we had a fantastic trip. The owner was one of the best property owners I have ever dealt with and was more then happy to answer any questions we had upon arrival.

On the Sunday night we ran into some trouble, getting bogged about 25km's from camp. After about a 7km hike back on to the main road in the property we made a call to the owner who was more then happy to come out and pick us up and take us back to our camp, he even offered to help get the vehicle that night however we were more then happy with just a lift back to camp and went back the next day to recover my vehicle.

Property owners like this are few and far between and having the experience we had over the last weekend we have decided to make an annual trip to Milparinka.

Again Kerrie thanks to both yourself and the owner for making our trip possible and we can't wait to get back up there and have another crack next year! (I will book in the coming months for our next trip, the owner provided us with some great info on what are the best months to hunt so we will be looking at a trip earlier next year)."

"Hello Team,


Just returned from our trip to Nymagee. As you may know we had booked another property every year since 2008.

And since it was not available this year you suggested Nymagee.

Trying a new property for the first time has some uncertainties.

May I say however that from the very moment we pulled up to Nymagee we were impressed.

The accomodation is without fault. Each of the four cabins have their own showers, toilets, heaters, and kitchenette complete with Microwave, kettle, toaster and fridge. There was even a TV in each of the cabins (although I had no time or interest to turn it on)

This level of accommodation was a welcome for both my uncle and father as they are now getting on in age. So the added luxury was very much appreciated. However my concern is that given it was my sons first hunting trip he may have now been spoilt, as the bar has been set very high !

The hosts were very hospitable, with both taking the time to introduce us to the property and amenities.

They have some great plans for this property, and I hope it comes together for them.

The property itself was beautiful with the areas surrounding the hills some of the best I have ever walked.

Game was available. It is evident that the goats are hunted, as well as rounded up on occasions. And because of this they provided the right amount of challenge.

The hosts have a 2 goat per person limit, which I believe is generous enough. They mentioned that they try to manage the game on the property in an attempt to keep it sustainable. This hopefully should provide good hunting for as long as they continue to host hunters.

In short, we had a great time, on a great property with fantastic accomodation and terrific hosts. Positive feedback is rare these days.

"Review of Packsaddle - Not bad at all. Very good for SA based shooters like myself given the fact it was 726 km from the property to my front door. (Infact its closer than going after goats in my own state!)

The accommodation to be fair is shearers quarters but this is a pig shooting trip! and perfectly excusable. This place has all comforts of home.

This property would be great for a mob of around 4-5 plus blokes.

I didn’t see a live pig however I saw a few dead ones around. The pigs didn’t want to cooperate but if I was wild pig, I would not want to get shot either.

So not coming home with a set of tusks says more about my ability as hunter than anything else. I’m not in the least bit disheartened I’m keen to have another go ASAP.

The only thing I can pick on is no phone service. Well some by the shower hut and good service by the home stead. That said I went to shoot and disconnect from the world - not send texts !

"Just returned from Mitchell 1 and everything was as described. Information and map given by the manager (The owner was on a different farm at the time and could not meet us there) was valuable.
A beautiful area there with good maintained country roads. I was lucky to get a fat sow on the first day in the evening.
We have seen mobs of 15 - 20 pigs at times and even crossing the farm roads sometimes. Not big ones but they were there.
If available, we will re visit this farm. A bit of a long drive but it is worth the effort.

We just returned from our hunt yesterday and what can I say!

Our host is a great bloke, we thank him for his hospitality.

The property has some of the most superb Australian landscape that one could ever wish to see.
With a combination of open grassland and heavily timbered valleys leading upto sheer White Cliffs, we were spell bound!!!
The accommodation was as expected with only the basic necessities, which is all we wanted.

With plenty of goats visible and evidence of other feral animals the hunting wasn’t bad either.
Would definitely return for the sheer beauty of the place alone.

We left the accommodation better than we found it and obeyed all the rules of the land whilst there.
Overall a very positive experience from start to end.
