Mitchell is a town and locality in the Western Downs district of the Maranoa Region, in Queensland.
The town is located on the Warrego Highway, 587 Km west of Brisbane and 176 Km east of Charleville. The Maranoa River flows around the northern and eastern sides of the town before flowing into the Balonne River.
In town, you can top up with fuel, ammo, groceries, hardware, alcohol. The twon also has a tyre shop, hotels and a pool/spa.
Fuel is available in Mitchell from 8.30am - 5pm. Groceries are available until 7pm.
Mitchell is a town of 900 residents with the town named after the explorer Sir Thomas Mitchell who explored the entire region back in 1846 and who also gave his name to the local grass - the Mitchell grass. The country is good sheep and beef cattle pastoral country. The railway came to the town in 1885. The streets of Mitchell are named after famous Brittish coties - Cambridge, Winchester, Oxfors, SHeffield, Diblin, Liverpool and Edinburugh.
Mitchell #4 is a neat and tidy property and has been in the family since 1926. A couple of the old building still standing are in the old history book. Visitors are often impressed with the size of the property - it is a huge 32,000 acres - flat to undulating country with river country, dams, waterways, cattle, sheep and crops / cultivation.
Perfect for both shooters and bow hunters - hunt Pigs, Foxes, Cats, Rabbits, Hare and do some fishing in the many waterways and creeks - so bring your fishing gear. When you get to the property, ask the property owner is they are having trouble with any other pests that they would like you to help control.
Mitchell #4 is 71 Kms from the closest town. You don't need a 4wd to get to or around this property. Arrive on your agreed time, the property owners don't care what time, as long as you arrive on the agreed time.
The average rainfall on the property is 22 inches per year. Average winter temps are from -0 degrees all the way to 22 degrees. Summer temps are 34 - 42 degrees. Hunting is good all year but the property own thinks the best time to hunt is in the warmer months - perhaps they just don't like the cold!
The property owners love a chat - so take the time to ask the property owner about the best hunting spots and their guideline to enjoy your stay - and keep in their good books. They have a wealth of knowledge to share.
There are no extra charges for trophies.
The facilities sleeping quarters are really good with 4 seperate bedrooms, toilet, shower, cooking quarters and drinking water. Bring your swags, mattresses are supplied. You will need to bring all bedding and food but a decent sleeping quarters and kitchen facilities are provided for your stay.
You don't need to bring any firewood - there is already plenty on the property to collect. There is no phone service on the property.
You can sight in your firearms on the property, but the property owner requests that you do this right away from the camp. Of course observing all safety precautions and you can target shoot with care.
The owner hates hunters leaving dead game near or in dams. This obviously effects the drinking water for other livestock and animals - so dont do this.
Also don't leave your rubbish laying around. Contain your rubbsih, ask the property owner where to dispose of it - or take your rubbish home with you.
If you bring your family, there are dogs and pigs the family can feed - the property is great for relaxing and enjoying the great outdoors - very neat and tidy property.
Terrain is mostly flat to undulating and is riverside with creeks.
Temperature and Rainfall
Winter temps average 18 degrees, Summer averages 36 degrees and rainfall is about 21inches a year.
Well-kept sleeping quarters provided include 4 single beds, 2 double beds, shower, toilet, fridge, kitchen (full self-contained), cutlery, plates, microwaves, table, chairs and drinking water.
You will need to bring own pillows and bedding in the form of sheets, blankets or swags.
The best time to book is all year.
The best time to arrive at the property is between 7.30am and 5.30pm, departing whenever.
Rules on the property are simple – follow and read the conditions for property access book. Common Sense – leave gates as found, no shooting at or within 500m of stock, or on ridgelines, respecting property boundaries, avoid driving on crops. Be mindful of driving close to stock.
Do not shoot anywhere near main house or owners goats. Hunt respectfully. Take all rubbish with you to the designated area, obey any fire restrictions especially total fire bans.
The house and quarters are on the banks of the Maranoa River. River flats run into box and ironbark country and there is a non-permanent creek in the back paddock.
Visitors most enjoying the riverside lifestyle, the cleanliness of the property and good accommodations.
The property was purchased in 1926.
The present owners are happy to chat to guests who require more information.
There is a sports ground 18km away for golf, tennis, cricket and pony club, but walks along the river can also be a relaxing attraction here.
This property is 71km from the nearest major town of Mitchell where shops are open at 8.30am and fuel from 6.30am till late. Fuel, groceries, hardware, a chemist, bakery, newsagent, tyre shop, hotel, café and swimming pool can all be found in Mitchell.
It is recommended visitors come well equipped and bring insect repellent in summer.

For each non-hunter attending any of our properties, it is compulsory to be covered by current comprehensive public liability insurance. This is a non-negotiable requirement and forms part of your booking contract. Similar to having travel insurance to go on holidays. This insurance is available by being a current member of an AHO, the SSAA or the Shooters Union before your booking is approved.
We also recommend current ambulance cover.
